Granada - Spain where History Whispers among the Sierra Nevada Mountains
Why visit the Albaicin of Granada?
We have already told you: for us, visiting the Albaicin is, along with visiting the Alhambra, one of the basics of a route through Granada.
It is believed that the neighborhood was born in the 11th century, with the arrival of the Zirid Berbers, but, of course, along with the Alhambra, the Realejo and the Arrabal de Bib-Arrambla, it constitutes one of the ancient nuclei of Muslim Granada. In fact, the Albaicin preserves the urban fabric of the Nasrid period and you will quickly notice it when you walk through it. It is a labyrinth of narrow streets that go from its highest part (San Nicolas) to the Plaza Nueva, where you will find streets as beautiful as the Carrera del Darro and Elvira Street.
Its cármenes are a clear example of the architecture of the time. These were the traditional dwellings, surrounded by a high wall and with an orchard or garden inside, which also provided freshness. During the Nasrid period, 28 cisterns were also built, which provided water to the population. Many of them are still preserved.
In short, to see the Albaicín is to walk through centuries of history.
